About Yancey County
Yancey is the smallest county by population in our service area — about 18,000 residents, predominantly year-round with strong Appalachian heritage, growing artist community around Burnsville, and a smaller but loyal second-home contingent. Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi, anchors the county geographically.
Highest elevations of any county we serve — extensive Fraser fir, red spruce, and northern hardwood stands at 4,000–6,000 ft, transitioning to mixed hardwoods on lower slopes. Tree-removal access is often the limiting factor on these steep slopes.
After Helene: Yancey was the most catastrophically hit county in the region. The Cane River corridor, Pensacola, and many holler communities lost homes, roads, and entire stands of trees. Recovery work continues, and the post-storm hazard-tree inventory is enormous.
What makes this county distinct
- Mt. Mitchell State Park — highest peak in the eastern United States (6,684 ft)
- Burnsville's art community is a major small-town cultural draw
- Cane River corridor — heavy Helene impact, ongoing recovery
- Lowest population density of the seven counties — significant rural-access challenges
