Tree Pruning across the NC High Country
Structural pruning, deadwood removal, and view-clearing — done by crews who understand mountain species, not strip-mall hedge trimmers.
The work
Good pruning is a long-term investment. Done well, it extends a tree's structural life, opens views without scarring the canopy, and reduces the chance of storm damage years before the next big wind. Done poorly — usually with a chainsaw, no rigging, and a 'topping' approach — it permanently disfigures the tree and triggers decay.
Our routed crews know the difference. They prune for structure on young trees, deadwood and crown reduction on mature ones, and clearance pruning around roofs, power drops, and porch lines. View-clearing in High Country resort communities is a specialty — done with selective lower-branch removal so the tree still looks like a tree, not a flagpole.
We do not top trees. Ever. If a crew you've worked with before has been topping your maples or oaks, the canopy is already weakened — call us and we'll route you to someone who can assess what's recoverable.
When this service is the right call
- Deadwood removal after a hard winter or summer drought stress
- Structural pruning on young trees (best done early — saves big money later)
- Crown reduction on mature trees overhanging the roof or driveway
- Selective view-clearing for porch views, decks, or windows
- Clearance pruning around power lines or service drops (we coordinate with the utility)
Typical pricing
$300–$1,500 per tree for most residential pruning. Multi-tree jobs and crane-assisted reductions on large oaks run higher.
Quotes are confirmed on-site before any work begins. We do not push jobs that don't need doing.
Common questions
- When is the best time of year to prune?
- Most hardwoods prune cleanest in late winter (Jan–Feb) when they're dormant and visible. Light deadwooding can happen year-round. Avoid heavy pruning on stressed trees during summer drought. The crew can tell you on-site whether to do it now or wait a month.
- Why shouldn't trees be topped?
- Topping triggers a flush of weak sprout growth that becomes hazardous within a few years. It also opens large wounds that invite decay. Done repeatedly, it shortens the tree's life by decades. If you want height reduction, ask for a crown reduction done at proper lateral branches — it costs more, but it doesn't damage the tree.
- How much can I cut without hurting the tree?
- Healthy mature trees tolerate roughly 20–25% of live canopy removal in a single year before they start stressing. Stressed or older trees tolerate less. The crew will tell you what's safe and what to phase across multiple visits.
