Service

Stump Grinding across the NC High Country

Grind out leftover stumps below grade so the area can be reseeded, replanted, or paved.

The work

Stump grinding is the quiet finish-the-job service. After a tree comes down, the remaining stump and surface roots can sit for years if no one grinds them — and they make mowing a hazard, replanting impossible, and the property line look unfinished. Our routed crews bring self-propelled or trailer-mounted grinders depending on access. Most residential stumps grind 4–8 inches below grade, which is enough for grass seed, sod, or shallow plantings to take. If you're paving or pouring a foundation over the spot, ask for a deeper grind (12+ inches) so the remaining root mass doesn't heave. Grindings can be left on-site as mulch (free) or hauled off (add-on). Either way, the crew rakes the area before they leave.

When this service is the right call

  • Cleanup after a recent tree removal that left a stump
  • Old stumps that have been sitting for years — easier to grind than people think
  • Multiple stumps from a yard cleanup or land-clearing project
  • Grinding ahead of new driveway, patio, or foundation pour
  • Removing surface roots that have lifted sidewalks or settled pavers

Typical pricing

$150–$600 per stump depending on diameter, root spread, and access. Multi-stump jobs price lower per stump.

Quotes are confirmed on-site before any work begins. We do not push jobs that don't need doing.

Common questions

How deep do you grind?
Standard is 4–8 inches below grade — enough to replant grass or shallow ornamentals. If you're building or paving, mention it on the form and the crew will quote a deeper grind appropriate for what's going on top.
Will the grindings work as mulch?
Yes, fresh grindings make decent mulch for non-edible beds. They're high in carbon, so let them age a season before mixing into garden soil. If you don't want them on-site, the crew can haul them off — usually a $50–$150 add-on depending on volume.
What about the big lateral roots?
Roots within a few feet of the trunk usually get ground along with the stump. Roots running farther — under a driveway, into a neighbor's yard — are typically left in place and allowed to decay. The crew will tell you on-site if a root needs more aggressive removal.
